Klimasommerskoler 2009

Evolutionary Ecology of Invasive Organisms under Climate Change
-
Beskrivelse. This course explores the theoretical background and methodological approaches to study evolution of invasive organisms under the influence of climate change. Climate change is a major threat to sustainable use of natural resources, and biological invasions represent a significant component of global change. The way these organisms (together with existing pests and beneficials) respond to a changing climate is of fundamental importance to conservation of biodiversity, land use and plant production.

Periode. Sommerskolen løber fra den 17. til den 21. august.

Sustainability in Rural-Urban Regions: The Rural Landscape in a Globalized World
-
Beskrivelse. This course explores issues related to sustainability and local landscapes in the context of accelerated global changes. The course will be located in a venue north of Copenhagen well suited to explore the influence of the national capital of Denmark. On the one hand, this region is influenced by its proximity to a large urban agglomeration, on the other hand it is appreciated for its natural and cultural values and currently a new national park is being designated within the region.

Periode.

International Environmental Policy
-
Beskrivelse. The summer school focuses on the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of international environmental policy. International environmental policy has grown dramatically over the last three decades, driven by concern over unprecedented and large-scale global environmental change, including climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, marine degradation, and expanding trade and consumption. International environmental policy now directly and indirectly affects the behaviour and decisions of governments, corporations, NGOs, local communities and individuals.

Periode.

The Looming Crisis: Food Scarcity, Environmental Degradation and Poverty in the Century of Human Security
-
Beskrivelse. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary analysis of the structural and direct causes of food and environmental crisis that developing countries are currently confronting and battling. It seeks to examine the main issues around hunger and famine in the context of poverty and human rights and critically assess the impact of key policy solutions adopted thus far in an attempt to manage (without solving) the ongoing global food crisis. In particular, it will engage students in the analysis of how the intricate and complex interdependence among countries has compromised and very often permanently altered the ability of developing economies to prevent and respond to food crisis, with famine and hunger emerging as the major challenges to peace and stability in the 21st century.
- Periode.

Sustainable Urban Management
-
Beskrivelse. In the process of 20th century urban development, characterized by urban expansion and redevelopment, industrialized countries witnessed a surge in the number, scale and complexity of urban structures. However, with conventional technologies focused on the construction of structures, it has become difficult to keep urban space adaptable to environmental constraints and economic, social and cultural changes. Conventional technologies can no longer meet the social demands of upgrading social capital in a sustainable manner, and the regeneration of attractive urban space that is not only safe and highly efficient, but also conscious of historical, cultural and local identities, guaranteeing a high quality of life for all.

-
International IARU Summer School 2009: Global Change and Sustainable Local Landscapes: This course aims at exploring methodological approaches to landscape changes. The focus is on landscape patterns and functions as they are affected partly by local agents and processes; partly by external decisions, events and processes. The specific balance of local and global drivers is considered a key to understanding the dynamic process of landscape change.
-
IARU PhD Summer School in the field of evolutionary invasion biology: The aim would be to train PhD and postdoctoral students in interdisciplinary fields with relevance for climate change effects on plant production systems. Mere information kan fås hos Det Biovidenskabelige Fakultets studenterservice.
-
PhD Summer School - Management of vulnerable ecosystems in a changing climate: The aim is to train PhD and post doctoral students in interdisciplinary fields with relevance for climate change effects on ecosystems and discuss scientific results from plant production systems. The objectives are to bridge the gap between effect studies of climate change impact on vulnerable ecosystems and management of semi-natural ecosystems.
